Safety and Engineering

In delivering an environment conducive for passengers, goods and aircraft the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria must at all times provide, install and maintain all non-aeronautical infrastructures at the airports under its management. It must also accomplish a high level of operational reliability of these facilities, which are as diverse and complex as the airfields and the light bulbs in the terminal buildings. This way, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria ensures safe navigation as well as passenger comfort.

  1. The directorate has the task of providing the following basic services at the airports:
  2. Power supply and distribution. Installation and maintenance of generating plants and distribution equipment.
  3. Visual Aids Approach, Runway and Taxiway lighting, VASIS and PA1'IS are provided for safe and all weather operations.
  4. Airport illumination such as Street lights, internal lights Apron flood light, building and security lights.
  5. Passenger and Baggage Handling Equipment. The Department installs and maintains conveyor belts, lifts, escalators, travelators and aircraft badges.
  6. Air-conditioning and Refrigeration, including central air-conditioning, package units, split and window units, kitchen equipment and refrigeration machines.
  7. Plants and Equipment. Responsibility covers construction plants, graders, dozers, tractors, grass cutting equipment, hydraulic platforms, airport sweepers, basic workshop machines, mills, grinders, lathes, etc. It also provides fuel dumps and dispensing infrastructure.
  8. Fire Trucks. It provides and maintains fire vehicles such as the Rapid Intervention Vehicles, ambulances and the 8 x 8 major airport crash truck.
  9. Surface Transportation. Cars, light trucks, pick-ups, staff buses, water tanks, fuel tankers, lorries, high and low loaders.
